As with any surgical
procedure, weight loss surgery may present risks. One or all of the
following conditions and complications are possible following all
types of weight loss surgery procedures, as well as for all types of
gastric surgical procedures:
- General
Anesthesia risks such as difficulty in placement of the
breathing tube.
- Aspiration and vomiting during
intubation.
- Anastomotic Leak resulting from leakage of fluid within the
bowel due to an incomplete seal at the anastomosis (connection).
- Pulmonary Embolism caused by formation of blood clots that
usually start in the legs and travel to the lungs.
- Small Bowel Obstruction, a twist or kink in the bowel
resulting from scarring.
- Pneumonia, an infection in the lungs.
- Atelectasis, a condition in which part of the lung
collapses.
- Stroke, congestive heart failure, irregular heartbeats or
heart attack especially in patients with a history of heart
disease.
- Bleeding and injury to vital organs, and possible nerve
injuries to the arms and legs.
- Kidney and liver failure.
- Severe wound infection or seroma.
